What a fantastic
opening to the 2008 CFL season. Two wins, two dominant wins, and most
importantly to this observer, two very entertaining wins.
Star of the game,
unquestionably, was Anthony Calvillo. A second straight impressive
performance from our starter who is clearly rejuvenated playing in the Trestman
offence.
The first half was
pretty darn close to perfect. As expected, we came in with an aerial
attack, the Bombers' being pretty good against the run. And did it ever
work! AC was on target, the line was giving him time to make his reads,
the receivers were in a zone, and what can we say about that one-handed TD grab
by Richardson? Fantastic.
GIve the Bombers some
credit though, they showed character in making a game of it in the second half.
It would have been easy, down 31-7, to send in all the backups and
surrender. But they didn't, and threw a scare into us.
But it was AC to the
rescue again, he took the team on his shoulders and just refused to allow us to
let this one get away. His two long runs on the clinching drive showed
the man's determination. I daresay he'll be up for offensive player of
the week for the 2nd consecutive week. Not too shabby for a QB who was
being written off by more than a few observers.
Another great performer
I thought was TSN commentator Glen Suitor; he zeroed in on Mark Estelle
cheating up on the Bombers' outside WR, and sure if Glenn didn't hit him on a
deep route for a TD on the very next play. Suitor also showed us how
Glenn was picking on Shawn Gallant when the latter had to replace Diamond Ferri; but Gallant got the last laugh!
A wonderful start to
the season, and at this point we're alone in first in the east. Up next
are the Stampeders, here's hoping we continue to provide quality, entertaining
football.
I'll miss the next
match, being off fishing for a week.
