Edwards Jumps Ship

Mississauga – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is pleased to announce that two-time East Division All-Star RB Robert Edwards has signed a practice roster agreement with the club.

Edwards made his CFL debut in 2005 with the Montreal Alouettes and accumulated 2,767 yards from scrimmage and 25 touchdowns on 426 carries and 48 receptions in his first two seasons.  In 2006, he finished atop the CFL with 17 total touchdowns and was third in the league in rushing with 1,155 yards on the ground.

Before joining the Alouettes, Edwards was a first round (18^th overall) NFL draft pick of the New England Patriots in 1998.  In his rookie campaign with the Pats, he totalled 1,115 yards and 9 touchdowns on 291 carries.  In 1999, he suffered a knee injury that sidelined him until 2002, when he re-joined the NFL with the Miami Dolphins.

The Toronto Argonauts also announced that DB Jermaine Mays and RB Jamel White have been released.

2007: Week 1, on active roster but did not dress…Week 2, started at RB and rushed 9 times for 28 yards and 1 touchdown versus Winnipeg…Week 3, started at RB and rushed 11 times for 38 yards and caught 2 passes for 17 yards in win over Hamilton…Week 4, dressed as RB and rushed 7 times for 6 yards versus Winnipeg…Week 5, on active roster but did not dress…Week 6, on active roster but did not dress…Week 7, on active roster but did not dress…Released by Montreal on August 18.

2006: Named East Division All-Star…Finished the season with a league-leading 17 touchdowns and was third in the league behind only Charles Roberts and Joffrey Reynolds in rushing yards with 1,155 yards on 239 carries…Also added 21 receptions for 211 yards and 3 touchdowns…2006 Playoffs Started at RB and rushed 24 times for 137 yards and 1 touchdown in East Championship versus Toronto…Grey Cup Championship Started at RB and rushed 15 times for 85 yards and 1 touchdown versus B.C.

2005: Signed as a free agent with the Montreal Alouettes…Named East Division All-Star…Played in 14 games, starting 12 games at RB and finishing the season with 187 carries for 1,199 yards and 8 touchdowns…Became the first Alouette to rush for 1,000 yards since 2002…Also added 21 catches for 202 receiving yards…2005 Playoffs Started at RB in both the East Semi-Final and East Championship accumulating 22 carries for 80 yards…Grey Cup Championship Did not play due to injury.

2003 – 2004: Did not play football.

2002: Played in 12 games with the Miami Dolphins, totalling 107 yards on 20 carries and catching 18 passes for 126 yards and 1 touchdown.

1999 – 2001: Did not play football while recovering from knee injury.

1998: Drafted in the 1^st Round (18^th overall) by the New England Patriots in the 1998 NFL Draft…Totalled 1,115 yards and 9 touchdowns on 291 carries in his rookie year with the Patriots…Also added 35 receptions for 331 yards and 3 touchdowns.

College: Played five seasons for the University of Georgia Bulldogs (1993-1997)…Began his university career as a cornerback before being moved to running back…Led the Bulldogs in rushing in 1996 and 1997…Was named First-Team All-American and Second-Team Southeastern Conference All-Star in 1997.

Personal: Robert was named the 2003 winner of the Jim Thorpe Courage Award after returning to pro football with the Miami Dolphins. His younger brother is WR Terrance Edwards of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and he studied Marketing while at Georgia
