Veteran and Newcomers Alike Make Big Plays in Stamps Camp on Days 2 and 3.

STAMPEDER TRAINING CAMP – DAY 2

(Calgary) – The morning session on day 2 brought much of the same weather with the sun beaming and not a cloud in the sky.  The afternoon practice saw the first cloudy weather of this year’s camp with a looming thunder shower above as the Red and White took to the field.  The weather would not slow anyone down with the competition level rising yet again.  With several key positions up for grabs, players battled tooth and nail to catch the eye of the coaching staff.

PLAYS THAT STOOD OUT…

Day 2 provided more exciting plays with a couple of veterans attempting to take the spotlight back from the newcomers that shown so bright on day one.  Running Back Joffrey Reynolds looked ready for training camp with several significant gains along the ground including one run right through the heart of the defence that saw the West Division, CFL and CFLPA All-Star scamper through several defenders for a large gain.  In usual form, Receiver Nik Lewis made several catches in traffic, finding holes and seams in the defence for the entire practice.  Marc Boerigter demonstrated why the Stampeders brought him back into the fold by making a double move to secure a long pass down the sideline from Henry Burris.

Defensively, Rob Andrews who attended the same College as Boerigter, was able to gain the inside angle and intercept an intended pass for his first highlight of camp.  Adrian Ward was back at it again with another interception.

Despite the afternoon clouds, there was no shortage of highlight material in the second practice of Day 2. Crance Clemons continued to disturb the receiving corps with his tight coverage, intercepting a pass early in practice while Trey Young and Sadrick Williams involved themselves in a number of knockdowns.

In the trenches, offensive linemen Jeff Pilon and Bobby Singh displayed why they have been such longstanding members of the CFL.

STAMPEDER TRAINING CAMP – DAY 3

(Calgary) – Today marked the third consecutive day of two-a-day practices for the Stampeders. Although it seems as though the pre-camp butterflies have escaped all the players and that they have all settled into a routine, there was certainly nothing dull about the competition level on the field. The Stamps will enjoy a break from two-a-days tomorrow with their only practice of the day beginning at 9:00 am.

PLAYS THAT STOOD OUT…

With the battle for roster spots heating up, there were many notable plays over the course of the day. Early on, it was receiver Jeremaine Copeland who found a seam in the zone defense deep down the middle of the field which he converted for a touchdown on a perfectly placed pass from quarterback Henry Burris. Nevertheless, the defensive backs would have their revenge over the course of the morning session as safety Trey Young knocked down a pair of passes and Crance Clemons intercepted his third pass in as many days. Finally, with the practice almost over, linebacker Brian Clark proved why he has been such a premium player in the CFL when he intercepted a pass in the end zone to prevent a touchdown.

It turned out to be Copeland’s day overall as he caught an amazing falling down catch down the sideline in the second practice from quarterback Henry Burris with a defender draped all over him. The running attack also seemed to be firing on all cylinders as Godfrey Ellis threw a huge block to spring running back Wes Cates up the middle for an enormous gain. The veterans weren’t the only ones making impressions in the afternoon, quarterback Barrick Nealy delivered a bullet right on the money to rookie receiver Greg Hetherington and J.R. Tolver athletically cut in front of a defender, turning an easy interception into a nice catch.

Defensively, Scott Coe menaced the offense as he involved himself in the play on more than one occasion over the course of the afternoon practice and veteran defensive back Jermaine Chatman demonstrated dominant man to man skills.
