“We are delighted to welcome Kent and his family back to our
province,” stated Riders’ General Manager and VP of Football Operations Eric
Tillman. “In personal terms, I know Kent and Shelley feel this is a very
special place to raise their children.
From a football perspective, I have tremendous confidence in Kent. His
intelligence, character, and work ethic are second to none.” Austin joins the
Riders after serving as offensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts from
2004-2006. In 2004, he helped coach the Argos to a Grey Cup championship and in
2005 his work with quarterback Damon Allen helped the Argo quarterback claim
his first ever CFL Most Outstanding Player Award. In 2003, Austin made the
transition into the coaching ranks when he served as the quarterbacks coach for
the Ottawa Renegades. “It is a tremendous
honour to accept the position of head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
This is a special place that cares deeply about their football team. My wife
and I are excited to once again be a part of this community and raise our
children here,” said Austin. Austin returns to the
Saskatchewan Roughriders after playing for the team from 1987-1993 during which
time he led the Green and White to their second ever Grey Cup championship in
1989. After passing for 474 yards in that celebrated victory over Hamilton,
Austin was presented with the Grey Cup MVP trophy. In 1999 Austin was enshrined
forever when we was inducted into the Roughrider Plaza of Honor. Kent, his wife Shelley and
their three children – Kendall (14), Kassidy (9), & Wesley (7), will
make Regina their year-round home. |
