From the Lark's Nest: Grey Cup Edition
Montreal Alouettes

Well, we can sum up the Grey Cup in one phrase: the better team won. Too bad it wasn't us.

BC was dominant in almost all phases of the game.  Als fans just have to accept that our team is just not as good as the Lions.  No point in complaining about officiating.  The Lions were just better.

That being said, we sure didn't help our cause by playing a dreadful first half.  The tone was set on our first series.  With BC probably expecting us to forcefeed Edwards all game, coming out throwing deep on first down was not a bad call, particularly to Wilson as they likely weren't expecting that.  But AC overthrew him badly.  Second down it's Wilson again, he's clearly open in the flat on an out pattern, but again AC sails the ball way over his head; Wilson couldn't have gotten to that one with a stepladder.

Sadly that indicated how the first half was going to go; AC throwing terribly wobbly passes, usually too high or too low (and no complaints please about the new ball, DD didn't seem to have any trouble throwing strikes with it), and when he was on target, the receivers had an annoying case of the dropsies.

In the second half our team showed some heart and character, and threatened to make a game of it; were it not for the Edwards fumble at the goalline, who knows what may have transpired.........

On the positive side, the defence played very well.  To hold the potent BC offence to only one touchdown is a major accomplishment.

Star of the game on offence was clearly Cahoon, who played with heart and determination throughout.  Star of the game on defence was Kai Ellis, in clearly his best game in an Alouette uniform.

So, once again we are the bridesmaids. I don't think this team needs a complete overhaul (we got there again, after all), but we do need upgrades in certain areas.  I'll have more to say on that later after all the dust settles on what was a very inconsistent season.

From an overall CFL perspective, the Grey Cup game was a reflection of the season; for the first time in a long time, defences were dominant in the CFL this year, something we have not been used to.  This game, from an entertainment viewpoint, was much like most of the season; rather forgettable.
