Winnipeg Blue Bombers

Winnipeg showed what kind of team they could be, in the second half.

In the first half of the Banjo Bowl, Winnipeg wasn’t taking advantage of the good field position the defence was giving them. The score should not have been close at all. Once Winnipeg’s offence can play four quarters of football, and finish off drives like they did in the second half, we will be looking like a Grey Cup team.

As a matter of fact we will beat Calgary next week. We can’t expect to hold an offence of Calgary’s calibre the way we do other teams. So our offence will need to step it up and fill out that potential. We need to do what we did in the second half against Saskatchewan. Go to Stegall and Roberts and use them as a one two punch. They can’t key on both of them, they will have to key on one or the other, and they’re simply to good to be able to cover both of them at the same time effectively. Milt will always find a way to get open in double coverage, and Roberts will find a way to gain yards even if there are two guys in the backfield when he gets the ball.

About our receiving corps, I think the Winnipeg offence will be far more effective if we do the following things. Bench Brazzell and start Albert Johnson in his place. They both play the same position, and Brazzell hasn’t been playing with any passion, either that or he’s lost a step. Chris is also scared of getting hit and stays away from contact. I think Albert will go all out if given the chance, on every play. He’s also just as fast as Chris and has good hands. He’ll be just as much a deep threat as Brazzell because he is just as fast.

Another thing, move Jamie Stoddard into the slot. He’s not fast enough to be a wideout, and he will get a lot more balls thrown his way if he’s closer to the QB. And with his hands, that’s a very good thing. Move him inside, and move Thurman to wideout, far away from the QB; he’s just not producing. Use this group this way until Kwame Cavil and Quentin McCord get back. Then let the coaches decide where to move the receivers. But once they get back we definitely need to replace Thurman with McCord, get 4 NI’s on the line and use Stoddard in slot for the NI receiver.

That’s my take on it anyways.
